Jiulong Baguazhang is part of
the Li Family
Daoqiquan martial arts system brought to this nation from China by
Master Li Long Dao. Dr. John P. Painter teaches this internal martial
art throughout the world via The Gompa, a Traditional Martial Arts
Training Hall as well as his various satellite study groups around the
world. CDIA © teaches Jiulong Baguazhang via group and private
classes as well as weekend intensives.
Baguazhang is characterized by training with
open
palms as well as a particular method of training while walking the
circle and performing material while turned toward the center of the
circle as well as using other geometric shapes and patterns. Baguazhang
is famous for not only combat, but long term training will induce
incredible health and longevity as well.
We train exactly the same way we would apply this art if needed. Many
systems train intricate forms but revert to basic kickboxing when
combat or self defense situations arise. Jiulong Baguazhang is unique
in that how we train the material is how we would apply it. There is no
wasted time learning "dead" forms for promotional reasons. All training
is for the total embetterment of the student.
Jiulong Baguazhang has no set "forms", rather we train using 8 palms
that contain various concepts using angles, and power generations which
when combined with whole body movement and correct body structure
create a powerful method of self defense and an excellent health
maintainence system.
Beginners begin learning the Jiulong Baguazhang system through the
"Dragon Rolling the Pearl" foundational program which lasts one year or
more. Students start training their body through Kai Men Dao Yin
foundational exercises as well as shifting using the whole body.
Students will progress from static training to learning to walk with
whole body coordination as well as starting to unify the movement of
hands and feet with the body. Many training drills and games are
introduced in this first foundational period. After this program has
been successfully inculcated into the student, the next level of
training would be exposure to Heaven Palm. The first palm taught in the
Jiulong Baguazhang System.
Beginners and advanced level practitioners can learn this system.
CDIA© teaches openly and hold nothing back to deserving
students.
Learning
Jiulong Baguazhang
Learning Jiulong Baguazhang is a methodical process which can be
described as being layered like a brick wall. The foundation is laid
and allowed to set and then a new layer is then added to the bottom
layer, this new layer is dependent on the bottom layer for without that
foundation, it would crumble. Jiulong Baguazhang is dependent on each
layer being added in a specific sequence for the student to progress
and understand each layer.
As Dr. Painter is famous for saying, "Give a man a fish and they eat
for a day. Teach a man to fish and he eats for a lifetime. I want you
to learn to fish with this material".
The Jiulong Baguazhang system is not full of archaic forms which are
repeated time and time again for grading for the next belt. There are
no belts per say in the system other than specific sashes used in
ceremonies to designate the Shifu(Teacher-Father) from the students, as
well as the Study Group Leaders/Xiang Dao.
From the start a student will learn basic body structure and how to
recognize and train themselves to maintain this structure not only in
class but carry it over into the real world.
The basics program consists of training which encompasses at least a
year of hard work to attain proficiency. Once this level has been
attained and tested regularly. Students will be introduced to more
advanced material as prescribed by Dr. Painter, Shifu Robert Castaldo,
and Xiang Dao Dale Dugas.
Advanced students will be introduced to Shuai Jiao concepts as well as
Combat Chin Na and how throwing and grappling are taught from within
the system.
